ACTIVE / PASSIVE VOICE
IN ALL TENSES
When expressing our ideas we generally do it using one voice: ACTIVE VOICE; which is considered stronger than PASSIVE VOICE
In fact, writers prefer using ACTIVE VOICE whereas PASSIVE VOICE is preferred in Academic Writing.
We need to remember that we use passive voice when:
- We don’t care about the doer.
Example:
The helicopter was refueled and immediately took off for the next destination.
- We don’t know who did the action.
Example:
I left lots of coffee but apparently, all the coffee in the jar has been drunk.
- We focus on the receiver instead of the doer.
Example:
Death in the Andes was written by Mario Vargas Llosa in 1993.
We form PASSIVE VOICE SENTENCES with the verb BE in different tenses plus the past participle of the main verb.
But remember only TRANSITIVE VERBS, verbs that take one or more objects, can be made PASSIVE.
ACTIVE / PASSIVE VOICE IN ALL TENSES
Examples:
TO READ (transitive verb)
ACTIVE VOICE: All the students of the course are reading that book.
PASSIVE VOICE: That book is being read by all the students of the course.
TO LAUGH (intransitive verb)
ACTIVE VOICE: My classmates laughed at my jokes loudly.
PASSIVE VOICE: My jokes were laughed at my classmates.

We may omit the “BY phrase” in passive voice sentences if we consider not necessary to mention the doer or if it is obvious.
Example:

We can have an indirect object as the subject of a PASSIVE VOICE SENTENCE.

When writing in English we write a sentence in one voice: “active or passive voice”
When using Active Voice, the person who does the action is emphasized; therefore, it’s the most important.
My mother makes delicious cookies .
My cousins play badminton.
When using passive voice, the object who receives the action is the most important.
Delicious cookies are made by my mother
Badminton is played by my cousins.
How do we form sentences using passive voice?
• The subject of an active voice sentence becomes the object of a passive voice sentence
• The most important verb in each passive voice sentence is the verb “Be”
• The main verb is written in its past participle form
• We use the preposition “by” to name the subject of the active voice sentence
• We can use an object pronoun (me, her, him, them, us, it, you) after the preposition “by”.
